Swim 21
Wisbech Swimming Club has achieved the standards of Swim 21
What is Swim 21?
The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) is the governing body for the
sport of swimming in England. Swimming clubs affiliating to
the ASA must comply with its rules and the laws of swimming.
To ensure that affiliated clubs offer quality swimming programmes the
ASA has developed a swimmer and club development model called Swim 21
which provides a benchmark against which clubs can measure
themselves. Clubs that achieve all of the standards are then
accredited with ‘Swim 21’ status.
What do Clubs have to do?
Wisbech Swimming Club began work on Swim 21 in 2002 with an audit of
its swimming programme and the club structure. At the end of its
process an action plan was submitted to the ASA in mid-2005 for
approval to address areas needing attention. Throughout late 2005 and
2006 most elements of the action plan were implemented.
How Are Clubs Assessed?
Following implementation of the action plan clubs go through a process
of self-assessment against a range of ‘elements’
and are required to score themselves against these criteria.
The assessment and evidence are submitted to an ASA assessment panel
for their consideration.
What are the standards?
There are four levels for accreditation:
Teaching (Club develops basic swimming skills)
Skill Development (Club develops technical skills in a training
environment)
Competitive Development (Club runs a programme that produces District
level swimmers)
Performance (Club runs a programme that produces National level
swimmers)
Within each level the elements for
assessment are grouped into four areas:
-
Swimmer development
-
Coach Development
-
Club Administration
-
Partnerships
What level has Wisbech Swimming Club Achieved?
The national ASA assessment panel awarded Wisbech Swimming Club Swim 21
status in the level of Skill Development on 23rd July 2006.
What Happens Now?
Work is still carrying in the Club through an action
plan to continuously develop our swimming programme and Swim 21
provides the framework and benchmark against which we will continue to
measure ourselves. Swim 21 accreditation lasts for four years
and is subject to an annual review.
What is Sport England’s Clubmark?
Clubs achieving Swim 21 also automatically meet the standards of Sport England’s Clubmark and signifies the Club’s commitment to being a safe, effective and child-friendly sports club.
